Temporary Overnight Detours Part of New $3 Million Project to Improve Safety and Traffic Flow

 
(January 26, 2010) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is temporarily closing and detouring the ramps from northbound and southbound  I-95 to westbound I-695 (Inner Loop) on Wednesday night, January 27 and Thursday night, January 28 between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next morning.

 

Overnight travelers on I-95 traveling to westbound I-695 (Inner Loop) will be diverted to eastbound I-695 (Outer Loop) to exit 9, Hollins Ferry Road.  Motorists will then be directed through the Hollins Ferry Road interchange back to westbound I-695.       

 

The temporary ramp closures and detours allows crews to safely place pavement markings and install concrete barriers as part of a project to widen and reconfigure the I-95 ramps to westbound I-695 near Catonsville.  In case of inclement weather, overnight ramp closures and detours will take place on Sunday night, January 31 and/or Monday night, February 1. 

 

The project will ultimately provide an additional lane along the ramp from southbound I-95 to westbound I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) as well as a dedicated lane on the ramp from I-95 northbound to westbound I-695.  The improvements will reduce congestion on the ramps during morning and evening peak travel periods. 

 

Utility relocation work associated with the $3 million project began in mid-November; the project is expected to be complete this fall, weather permitting. 

 

During construction, temporary lane and ramp closures may occur within the I-95/I-695 interchange between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and weeknights between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.  No lane or ramp closures are anticipated on I-95 or I-695 between 5 a.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Sunday.  The State’s contractor for the project is Pessoa Construction, Inc. of Fairmount Heights, Maryland.
