Montrose Road at I-270 is Temporarily Closed; Road Repair Necessary Following Tanker Truck Fire

(January 14, 2010) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is performing emergency pavement repairs to Montrose Road east of the I-270 bridge in response to this morning’s tanker truck fire.  Montrose Road will remain closed in each direction between Tower Oaks Boulevard and Seven Locks Road in Rockville, Montgomery County.  The ramp from southbound I-270 to westbound Montrose Road is the only ramp open at this time.  All other ramps within the interchange are closed to traffic.

SHA crews will mill the affected section of the interchange approach roadway today and return tomorrow to perform paving operations, weather permitting.  Crews will mill westbound Montrose Road first, and then move to the eastbound lanes.

The milling operation may last into the afternoon rush hour, so motorists should seek alternate routes to points west of the I-270/Montrose Road Interchange and expect major delays during the emergency roadwork.  When safe to do so, SHA crews will open lanes accordingly when safe and anticipate that lanes may be closed through the evening.  Lanes will reopen sometime later tonight upon completion of the initial milling.  Motorists can expect lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday as SHA paves the roadway.  All lanes should be open by Friday afternoon, weather permitting.

Motorists are urged to log onto www.roads.maryland.gov and click “CHART” for the latest traffic information on the emergency roadwork at the I-270/Montrose Road interchange in Rockville.
