Motorists Should Expect Flagging Operation and Shoulder Closures

(May 22, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin repairs to the roadside slope erosion at two structures along MD 36 (New George’s Creek Road) in Allegany County as soon as May 27. The work is expected to last up to six weeks, weather permitting. The erosion occurred because of the significant heavy rain the region experienced last week.

The first slope repair is the bridge on MD 36 over George’s Creek near Westernport and the other is a retaining wall along MD 36 just north of Midland. Drivers can expect daytime single-lane closures guided by a flagging operation for both repair projects Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Crews are also permitted to work on weekends as needed.

The work is being performed by contractor Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg. Crews will also use electronic message boards, signs, barrels and cones to notify motorists about the work zone, and lane closure.

Motorists are encouraged to stay alert, slow down and focus on driving safely through work zones and build in extra commuting time.
