Temporary Closure, Detour Needed for the Town of Elkton to Install New Pedestrian Bridge Over Big Elk Creek
(April 3, 2025) - The Maryland State Highway Administration will close a section of MD 7 (Delaware Avenue) between Howard Street and Creswell Avenue in the Cecil County town of Elkton beginning Tuesday, April 8 to install a new pedestrian bridge over Big Elk Creek. The closure will remain in place through Friday, April 11.
Detour signs will direct motorists around the work area using MD 281 (Main Street/Red Hill Road), MD 781 (Delancy Road) and US 40 (Pulaski Highway). During the closure, access to Delaware Avenue recreation facilities including Meadow Park will be maintained from the south side of Big Elk Creek.
The new bridge is part of the State Highway Administration’s project to improve pedestrian safety and access in Elkton. The prefabricated structure features a 10-foot wide shared-use path to accommodate cyclists as well as pedestrians, dramatically improving safety by separating these vulnerable roadway users from vehicle traffic crossing Big Elk Creek. This project also features reconstruction of Delaware Avenue sidewalks between MD 281 and the creek to current ADA standards.
For more project details and updates see MDOT SHA MD7 MD281 to Meadow Park CE4095179.
The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience as we work to improve Maryland’s transportation system. Motorists are asked to stay alert, stay focused and be aware of reduced speed limits and changing driving patterns. Slow down and move over in work zones. It’s the law.
Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
