Public Encouraged to Learn About Historic Bridge Project and Detour Plans
(April 2, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will host a public open house, 5 - 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, regarding the rehabilitation project for the historic bridge that carries US 40 over Conococheague Creek near Wilson in Washington County. The open house will be held at Clear Spring High School, 12630 Broadfording Road, Clear Spring.
The bridge was constructed in 1935 and is safe but needs rehabilitation to extend its service life. Work will replace existing parapets, the roadway deck and support columns, and rehabilitate the supporting substructure. The State Highway Administration understands the value of this bridge to the community and will do its best to maintain its historic integrity and look. The project aims to improve the structure to meet current safety standards while minimizing impact to residents, businesses and motorists. Also, in conjunction with this project, improvements will be made to the nearby Wilson Park kayak launch.

Work on the historic bridge is scheduled to begin spring 2025 and be completed by summer 2027. Traffic flow cannot be maintained across the bridge during this work, and a section of US 40 will be closed from June 2025 – starting after the end of the school year – through August 2026. A detour will be in place during this period directing eastbound and westbound through traffic to use MD 68 (Clear Spring Road), I-70 and MD 63 (Greencastle Pike). (See map above.)
At the public open house, State Highway Administration representatives will be available to answer project-related questions and listen to feedback. There will be no formal presentation at the open house. Attendees may arrive at any time during the open house to view maps and displays that highlight the proposed improvements. More information about the US 40 Bridge Rehabilitation Project is available on the
Project Portal page.
