Road Widening Will Accommodate a New Center Turn Lane in Beltsville;  Project Made Possible Through Stimulus Funding

(November 5, 2009) - Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) begins work on a $1.2 million road widening project on a half-mile section of MD 212 (Powder Mill Road) between Evans Trail Way/Allview Drive and Beltsville Drive in Beltsville, Prince George’s County.  Weather permitting, construction will be complete summer 2010.

Work includes widening MD 212 between west of Evans Trail Way/Allview Drive to west of Beltsville Drive to accommodate construction of a shared center turn lane and the existing travel lanes.  The new lane will provide separated left turn movements at the intersection.  

SHA will improve drainage, reconstruct existing traffic signals at MD 212 and Evans Trail Way/Allview Drive, and replace existing road signs and pavement markings.  SHA will  close on MD 212 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., and overnight Sunday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. 

Olney Masonry Corporation is the contractor for the project.  SHA will provide flaggers, variable message signs, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.
