Speed Limit Reduced Between Bonnie View Lane and Greenfield Road
(October 28, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has lowered the speed limit on US 1 (Washington Blvd) between Bonnie View Lane and Greenfield Road in Howard County from 45 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour.
A recently completed traffic study of this half-mile section by the State Highway Administration shows the reduction is expected to improve safety for all highway users. New regulatory signs and pavement markings that display the new speed limit of 40 miles per hour were recently installed to alert motorists.
“While vehicle speed is a critical factor in pedestrian safety, we recognize the need for a multiprong approach,” said District Engineer, Andrew Radcliffe, Jr. “The State Highway administration continues to work on additional improvements in this area.”
The State Highway Administration also has an upcoming project at the intersections of US 1 at Doctor Patel Drive and US 1 at Rowanberry Drive. The US 1 at Doctor Patel Drive portion of the project will construct a new full-color traffic signal with crosswalks and new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant ramps. The US 1 at Rowanberry Drive portion of the project includes new sidewalks with ramps, crosswalks and pedestrian signals.

The State Highway Administration encourages everyone to follow the rules of the road to state safe, including vulnerable pedestrians:
- Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks whenever possible.
- Press the pedestrian signal button and wait for the walk signal.
- Always stop at the curb and look left, right and left before crossing a street.
- Watch for cars turning in or leaving driveways.
- Wear light or bright colored clothing, especially if out walking after dusk.
- Pay attention and take off headphones while walking – no texting or playing games.
- Walk, don't run across the street.
