​Motorists Should Expect Overnight Work Next Week with Nightly Lane Closures with Detours 

(August 7, 2024) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will continue the overhead sign replacement project ​on I-81 between US 11 (Virginia Avenue)/Exit 2 and Halfway Boulevard/Exit 5 beginning Sunday, August 11 through August 12. The work should be complete by August 14, weather permitting.  

Crews will work Sunday through Thursday from 9 p.m.to 5 a.m. Drivers can expect nightly lane closures and partial ramp closures with detours.  

Scheduled Dates and Detour

  • Sunday, August 11 and Monday, August 12   9 p.m.-5 a.m. 
  • Detour for I-81 Exit 4A (I-70 east) and Exit 4B (I-70 west) southbound  
  • Motorists will be routed to Exit 2 and then onto northbound I-81 

Details of Detour 

  • Southbound I-81 at westbound I-70 will be closed. Drivers to be directed to southbound I-81 and exit at Exit 2 to a left at the top of the ramp and onto US 11. Drivers will then turn right onto northbound I-81 North to westbound I-70 West toward Hancock. 
  • Southbound I-81 at eastbound I-70 will be closed.  Drivers to be directed to southbound I-81 and exit at Exit 2 to a left at the top of the ramp and make a left on US 11. Drivers will then turn right onto northbound I-81 to eastbound toward Frederick. 
  • Westbound I-70 at northbound I-81 will be closed. Drivers will be directed to northbound I-70 to southbound MD 63 (Greencastle Road) to a left onto eastbound I-70 to southbound I-81 toward Roanoke. 

The State Highway Administration’s contractor, Baldwin Line of Elkridge, MD, will use electronic message boards, barrels, and cones to guide motorists safely through the work zone. They will also use assistance from Maryland State Police.  Drivers should plan additional driving time during the sign replacement project.  

The State Highway Administration appreciates motorists’ patience as we complete this necessary inspection and maintenance work. Drivers are asked to slow down in the work zone for the safety of all drivers and the crews working to improve our roadways.  ​
