Overnight Work Needed to Minimize Business and Traffic Impacts
(July 18, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a project to patch several sections of MD 272 in the Town of North East in Cecil County on July 21. The project should be complete in one week, weather permitting.
The sections of roads to be improve are as follows:
- MD 272 southbound (Main Street) from Russell Street to Irishtown Road.
- MD 272 northbound (Mauldin Avenue) from MD 7 (Cecil Avenue) to the bridge over Amtrak.
Work will take place from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights and will include milling and patching.
SHA is improving sections of MD 272 in Cecil County
Main Street (southbound MD 272) patching will require a full closure through the downtown area. Crews will place cones, barrels, barricades and signs to detour southbound MD 272 drivers to Mauldin Avenue (northbound MD 272), which will carry two-way traffic during overnight work hours. Local access will be maintained at all times.
Parking along Main Street is prohibited during milling and patching operations.
Maryland State Police, along with officers from the Town of North East, will be onsite each night to help ensure driver and worker safety. Northbound patching will also take three nights under a single lane closure and flagging operation.
SHA has been working closely with the Town of North East to plan and schedule this project. Performing this work at night minimizes traffic and business impacts, improves safety and expedites project completion. Residents, business owners and employees are encouraged to check Town communications for additional local details.
