Project Near Long Gate Shopping Center Provides New Sidewalks, Bike Lanes

(July 15, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has completed a $10.3 million project to improve intersection capacity along MD 103 (Montgomery Road) from US 29 (Old Columbia Pike) to the Long Gate Shopping Center entrance in Ellicott City, Howard County.

Construction on the project began summer 2022 and included:

  • adding a third travel lane on westbound MD 103 to access northbound US 29,
  • installing American with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks,
  • installing bicycle lanes painted green to highlight where drivers and bicyclists cross,
  • reconstructing traffic signals,
  • relocating underground and overhead utilities,
  • replacing curb, gutter and drainage pipes, and
  • upgrading landscaping and stormwater management facilities.

Completion of the project provides congestion relief along the corridor and enhances safety and accessibility for commuters traveling toward US 29. The installation of the sidewalks on both sides of MD 103 was completed in partnership with Howard County. Contractor Concrete General Inc., of Gaithersburg, performed the work. The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience as we work to improve Maryland’s transportation system. Motorists are asked to stay alert, stay focused and be aware of reduced speed limits and changing driving patterns. Slow down and move over in work zones. It’s the law.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
