New Left-Turn Lanes to Be Added at Three Intersections on MD 32 Just North of I-70

(October 9, 2009) – On Sunday, October 11, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin an $800,000 project to add new left-turn lanes at three intersections on MD 32 (Sykesville Road) between MD 99 (Old Frederick Road) and the Carroll County line in Howard County.  SHA is adding new left-turn lanes on MD 32 where it intersects with Day Road, River Road and Amberwoods Way north of I-70.

Additionally, SHA is adding a new continuous center left-turn lane on MD 32 between Emory Farm Lane and just south of the River Road intersection.  The new continuous center left-turn lane will extend approximately six-tenths of a mile and enhance safety and operations where MD 32 intersects with Emory Farm Lane, Coventry Meadows Drive, Indian Hill Drive and Heritage Farms Court.

The improvements will address recent safety and operational concerns by providing an exclusive left turn lane at the three intersections.  The center left-turn lane will also enhance safety as motorists access residences and a nearby church along this section of MD 32.  SHA will complete the project by early December, weather permitting.

During the work, crews will close a single lane of MD 32 between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday.  SHA will guide motorists through the work with variable message signs, barrels, flagpersons, and arrow boards.  Additionally, flaggers will direct traffic between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

More than 23,000 vehicles travel on this section of MD 32 each day. Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick-ups.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.  Choose Safety for Life—slowdown and focus in work zones.

SHA is funding the project as part of an existing areawide maintenance contract.  SHA awarded the project to American Infrastructure-MD of Fallston.  Those who have questions about traffic operations along MD 32, or other State numbered routes in Howard County, may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at 1-800-635-5119.
