Ramp to Close Between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

(October 9, 2009) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will close the ramp from eastbound MD 214 (Central Avenue) to southbound I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway).  Roadwork includes milling and resurfacing the existing pavement, and adding new pavement markings.

The work is necessary to accommodate the extra traffic from both sides of MD 214 when the ramp from westbound MD 214 to southbound I-95/I-495 is permanently closed.  SHA redesigned the MD 214 interchange to improve traffic flow and safety as well as accommodate the full-time operation of the nearby Arena Drive interchange.  SHA’s new design uses news ramps and signals to accommodate all traffic movements, allowing for removal of the old “cloverleaf” ramps that were congested and required a difficult merge in heavy traffic. The contractor will complete all work late fall.

Weather permitting, crews will close the MD 214 ramp overnight between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, Tuesday, Oct. 13, and Wednesday, Oct. 14.  In case of inclement weather, crews will perform the work the next available evening.  Motorists should be prepared for minor delays near the interchanges.  SHA will direct drivers to the westbound MD 214 ramp to northbound I-95/I-495, then to Exit 17 (westbound MD 202 - Landover Road) to a left turn back to the ramp for southbound I-95/I-495.

SHA will guide motorists through the work zone using electronic message signs, drums, and arrow boards. SHA reminds all drivers to Choose Safety for Life and buckle up, obey posted speed limits, think orange, and stay alert.  Customers who have questions about traffic operations on I-95/I-495, MD 202 or other State numbered routes in Prince George’s County may call SHA’s District 3 Office at 301-513-7300 or toll-free at 1-800-749-0737.
