Motorists Advised to Plan for Extra Travel Time Along Eastbound US 40 This Weekend and Look Ahead for Lane Closures and Detour Routes

(May 15, 2009) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration will institute temporary left turn lane detours at the intersection of US 40 (Pulaski Highway) at Rossville Boulevard this weekend for roadway repair work. The lane closures and detours will begin 10 p.m. tonight, Friday, May 15 and will be in effect until the weekend work is complete or 5 a.m. Monday, May 18.

Beginning 10 p.m. tonight, SHA and its contractor, P. Flanigan and Sons, of Baltimore, will close left turn lanes at the intersection. SHA will close the double left turn lanes from eastbound US 40 to northbound Rossville Boulevard and motorists will be directed past the intersection to make a U-turn at MD 700 (Martin Boulevard) to westbound US 40 to turn right onto northbound Rossville Boulevard. One through lane and the right turn lane along eastbound US 40 will remain open to traffic. The left lane along westbound US 40 at the approach to southbound Rossville Boulevard will be closed; however, left turns will be allowed from westbound US 40 to southbound Rossville Boulevard.

Motorists traveling from US 40 to Rossville Boulevard and destinations such as Franklin Square Hospital or CCBC – Essex should plan for extra travel time this weekend or consider alternate routes to Rossville Boulevard such as MD 7 (Philadelphia Road). In case of inclement weather the weekend work will be rescheduled after the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

This work is part of an ongoing $1.2 million project to repair and resurface sections of US 40 between the Baltimore City Line and Rossville Boulevard. Lane closures may occur daily between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday – Thursday, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Friday and nightly between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday – Thursday. This project will be complete early summer 2009.
