Starting Monday, Crews will Install a New Road Surface Through Downtown Sykesville

(October 19, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will remove the existing road surface and install a new asphalt surface on MD 851 (Main Street) between Wilson Avenue and West Friendship Road, at the Carroll County/Howard County line, in Sykesville on Monday, October 23. The project is expected to be complete in three weeks.

This new roadway surface is an initial layer to improve road conditions and safety. The final layer will be installed after an upcoming storm drain improvement project in the same section.

Starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, crews will close one lane of traffic and use a flagging operation to maintain two-way traffic on MD 851. The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The contractor, C.J. Miller, LLC based in Hampstead, will use electronic message boards, signs, barrels and cones to alert motorists about the lane closure and work zone.

This paving work follows the recent completion of Carroll County’s waterline replacement project in the same area on MD 851.

The State Highway Administration plans to start work on storm drain system repairs on MD 851 between Wilson Avenue and West Friendship Road next month. The work will require single-lane closures during work hours and is expected to be complete by December. Once the drainage work is finished, the final layer of the new roadway surface will be installed on MD 851 in spring 2024.
