Aging Storm Drain System to Be Replaced in Sykesville

(October 18, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a $2.5 million project next week to upgrade an aging storm drain system on MD 851 (Springfield Avenue) between Main Street and Warfield Road in Sykesville, Carroll County. The half-mile project is expected to be complete in summer 2024, weather permitting.

To prepare for the project, crews are starting work this week to remove the existing underground drain to install a new system at the intersection of Springfield Avenue and Spout Hill Road. Work will progress northward to Warfield Road. The existing system was installed prior to 1970. Other improvements as part of the project include a new curb, gutter and sidewalk along southbound Springfield Avenue.

The drainage improvements are part of a larger project in partnership with Carroll County. The county recently installed a new waterline in this area. Learn more about this project here.
