Dungarrie Road Intersection and MTA Bus Stop to Close During Construction

(August 22, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a $2.3 million project on Thursday, August 24, to replace a deteriorating low stone wall at the base of the slope separating westbound MD 144 (Frederick Road) from Greenoch Drive in the Dunmore community of Catonsville in Baltimore County.

The project involves the removal and replacement of most of the existing stacked stone wall with a new 410-foot concrete wall. The new wall will have a simulated stone finish, matching the existing wall’s endcaps, which will be preserved at the community’s request. Additionally, a three-foot ornamental metal fence will be installed on top of the stone wall.

“This project demonstrates SHA’s commitment to the safety of pedestrians, bicyclists and other vulnerable users,” said State Highway Administrator William Pines. “The enhancements along Frederick Road are an example of the many ongoing statewide projects to promote pedestrian safety."

The intersection of Dungarrie Road at MD 144 and the adjacent sidewalk will be closed throughout construction. In addition, the shoulder of westbound MD 144 between east of Dunmore Road and west of Dungarrie Road will be closed through summer 2024. For the safety of bus riders, the Maryland Transit Administration CityLink Purple Line bus stop on westbound MD 144 between Dunmore and Dungarrie Road will be discontinued through summer 2024. Bus riders on westbound MD 144 will need to use the stop near Paradise Avenue. Once the wall construction is complete and the slope is stabilized, the State Highway Administration will landscape the slope with new trees, shrubs and other vegetation.

Brawner Builders Inc., of Hunt Valley, will perform the work, which is expected to be complete summer 2024. The State Highway Administration understands temporary closures can be an inconvenience, but the work is necessary to maintain and improve the transportation system for all.
