Project Had Been Halted Earlier This Year Due to Rail Clearance
(August 10, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is resuming the $37 million project to replace the US 1 (Washington Boulevard) bridge over the CSX Transportation rail tracks in southwestern Baltimore County. Work was halted in December 2022 because clearance in one area of the bridge was just under CSX requirements. The State Highway Administration and CSX Transportation came to an agreement on how to resolve the clearance if it becomes a concern in the future.
The State Highway Administration worked in close collaboration with CSX, the contractor and other stakeholders to resume construction. The overall project, which includes reconstruction of the US 1 intersection at Clarke Boulevard, is now anticipated to be completed by the end of 2023, weather permitting.
The department thanks area residents and commuters for their patience while the State Highway Administration collaborated to resolve the clearance concern. Weather permitting, contractor crews will resume work tomorrow, Friday, August 11, and pour a portion of the new concrete deck – the driving surface of the bridge. The State Highway Administration anticipates shifting traffic over to the new bridge in September, with one lane open in each direction.
Other construction work remaining to be completed on the project includes:
- Widening the US 1 intersection at Clarke Boulevard to provide a new northbound US 1 left-turn lane at Clarke Boulevard immediately north of the bridge;
- Resurfacing the bridge approaches and installing traffic barriers;
- Improving drainage within the project limits; and
- Adjusting the pedestrian signal systems to enhance pedestrian safety at the US 1 intersection at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery.
Drivers can expect temporary lane closures and traffic pattern shifts overnight Sunday through Thursday 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., with daytime temporary lane closures Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
