Crews Will Construct New Sidewalk Along 900-Foot Section of Roadway; Right Lane Will Close Through Summer for Motorist Safety

(April 14, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will close the right lane of southbound US 1 (Washington Boulevard) between Cedar Avenue and Crestmount Road starting 9 a.m. Monday, April 17, to accommodate a sidewalk installation project in the Jessup area of Howard County.

The temporary lane closure will enhance motorist and work zone safety as crews continue work on a $1.7 million project to improve pedestrian access. The lane will reopen once the project is complete this summer.

Crews are installing a new sidewalk on a 900-foot section along southbound US 1. The project includes work on a 360-foot long retaining wall and partial reconstruction of the existing bridge over Dorsey Run. There will also be minor drainage improvements to this area.

Contractor A.J. Romano Construction Inc., of Laurel, will use concrete barrier, barrels and signs to alert motorists about the work zone and right lane closure.

As spring arrives, all motorists are urged to remain vigilant for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists. Remember that motorcycles can be hidden from view in vehicle blind spots. Please look twice and save a life.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
