New traffic pattern begins Thursday, September 3

(August 31, 2009)  Weather permitting, on Thursday, September 3, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) State Highway Administration (SHA) will realign Old Gunpowder Road where it crosses I-95 in Prince George’s County.  SHA will shift both lanes of Old Gunpowder Road to the west and set up a traffic barrier for the demolition of the east side of the bridge.  The work is part of the $2.4 billion Intercounty Connector (ICC) Project.

Beginning at 9 a.m. September 3, flaggers will direct traffic as old lane markers are removed and new striping is installed.  Motorists will experience lane shifts throughout the day, while different phases of the striping are performed.  Crews will open all lanes by 3 p.m.  Motorists should expect delays and consider alternate routes during the traffic shift.

The new alignment will be in place for up to one year; then, traffic will shift on to the newly constructed parallel bridge, with a similar alignment, while the second half of the bridge is demolished.  Variable message signs will alert motorists to the changed traffic pattern.

Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pickups.  Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
