Temporary Ramp Closures at Security Boulevard Interchange Part of $5.5 Million Resurfacing Project; Motorists Advised to Plan for Extra Travel Time and Look for Ramp Detour Routes

(August 21, 2009) – This weekend, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close two ramps at the I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) / MD 122 (Security Boulevard) interchange between 11 p.m. Saturday, August 22, and 5 a.m. Monday, August 24 for ramp resurfacing work.  SHA will close the ramp from westbound Security Boulevard to the Beltway Outer Loop, as well as the ramp from the Beltway Inner Loop to eastbound and westbound Security Boulevard.

Motorists along westbound Security Boulevard traveling to the I-695 Beltway Outer Loop will be detoured to I-695 Outer Loop to Exit 18 (MD 26 - Liberty Road) interchange, then back to the Beltway Outer Loop.  The ramp from eastbound Security Boulevard to the Beltway Outer Loop will remain open.

Motorists on the I-695 Inner Loop going to the ramp for eastbound and westbound Security Boulevard will be detoured past Exit 17 to Exit 18, then to the I-695 Outer Loop and back to Security Boulevard.  Alternatively, motorists going from the I-695 Inner Loop to Security Boulevard may use Exit 16 to use I-70 East, then the Park and Ride lot for I-70 West to reach Security Boulevard.  Through travelers on the I-695 Outer Loop during the weekend ramp closures should plan ahead for heavier traffic volumes between Exits 17 and 18.

The two ramp closures are part of SHA’s $5.5 million project to resurface the Inner and Outer Loops of I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Exit 17 (MD 122-Security Boulevard) and south of Exit 14 (Edmondson Avenue).

The three-mile project, which began in mid-July, includes mainline I-695 pavement repairs, milling and resurfacing; ramp repairs, milling and resurfacing at the Security Boulevard and Edmondson Avenue interchanges; drainage system repairs, curb and gutter replacement, installation of new guardrail; and installation of new reflective pavement markings.

Additional temporary weeknight ramp closures and detours at the Security Boulevard interchange may occur nightly between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday throughout the summer.   Temporary single lane closures along the Inner Loop and Outer Loop of I-695 may occur nightly between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, with double lane closures along I-695 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

SHA’s contractor for the I-695 project is American Infrastructure, Inc. of Fallston, and the entire roadway resurfacing project is slated for completion late fall 2009, weather permitting. For more information about the I-695 project, citizens may contact the I-695 project field office at (410) 945-1050 or contact SHA’s District Four Office – Construction Division at 410-229-2420, toll free at 1-866-998-0367, or email at shadistrict4@sha.state.md.us.
