Move Will Affect Traffic Operations along US 40 Alternate for Several Hours

(August 21, 2009) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will assist the Daughters of the American Revolution with the relocation of the historic Braddock Monument along US 40 Alternate (Old National Pike) in Frederick County.  The relocation is scheduled for Tuesday, August 25, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., weather permitting.

An oversized crane will lift the 32 ton monument from its existing location along US 40 Alternate near Braddock Heights Park to a flatbed tractor trailer for the move.  The flatbed tractor trailer will carry the Braddock Monument approximately one-half mile along US 40 Alternate where the monument will be placed at its new site, just west of Ridge Road on SHA right-of-way.

Currently the monument is located at the bottom of a slope and is partially obscured by US 40 Alternate and guardrail.  The new location’s elevation is closer to the roadway and will provide more accessibility for visitors.

Through traffic along US 40 Alternate will be maintained by a flagging operation as the crane is assembled and prepared to lift the monument.  Traffic along US 40 Alternate will be slowed as the rolling work zone transports the monument to the new location.

SHA advises motorists to avoid this section of US 40 Alternate during relocation of the monument and plan for extra travel time.  Motorists traveling east along US 40 Alternate are encouraged to take MD 17 (Burkittsville Road) north to US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) east.  Those traveling west are advised to use US 40 west to MD 17 south to US 40 Alternate.  For additional project information, please contact Skeet Fout, Fout Crane Inc. at 301-662-1989

For more information about the Braddock Monument relocation, contact Joanne Poole Baum, Daughters of the American Revolution at 301-845-7758.
