New Southbound MD 85 Ramp to Northbound I-270 to Open July 13
(July 7, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will shift travel lanes on MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike) between Pegasus Court and Spectrum Drive in Frederick County next week as part of the $91 million project to improve operations, reduce congestion and enhance safety at the I-270 and MD 85 interchange.
The traffic shift will take place over two nights to allow crews to safely work in the median. Lane closures will be in effect on MD 85 from 8 p.m. Wednesday evening, July 13, to 6 a.m. Thursday morning, July 14, then again from 9 p.m. Thursday evening to 6 a.m. Friday morning, July 15, so that crews can move traffic signals and mark the new travel lanes.
The following exit ramps will be closed during that overnight work:
- northbound MD 85 to northbound I-270,
- northbound I-270 to northbound and southbound MD 85,
- southbound I-270 to northbound MD 85, and
- northbound MD 85 to southbound I-270.
Crews will open a new ramp from southbound MD 85 to northbound I-270 on July 13.
MDOT SHA’s contractor, Joseph B. Fay Company Inc., based in Glen Burnie, will have electronic signs, road signs, cones and barrels in place to alert motorists about the work zone and guide them through the detour. Law enforcement also will assist with lane and ramp closures during the two-night operation.
The overall I-270 and MD 85 interchange project is expected to be completed in 2023. Learn more about the project by clicking

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.
Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
