Temporary Ramp Closures at Security Boulevard Interchange to Begin Sunday July 19; Motorists Advised to Plan for Extra Travel Time and Plan Ahead for Ramp Detours and Lane Closures

(July 16, 2009) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning a $5.5 million project to resurface the Inner and Outer Loops of I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Exit 17 (Security Boulevard-MD 122) and south of Exit 14 (Edmondson Avenue).  The three-mile project includes mainline I-695 pavement resurfacing, ramp resurfacing at the Security Boulevard and Edmondson Avenue interchanges, drainage system repairs, installation of new guardrail and installation of new reflective pavement markings.
Ramp work will begin 11 p.m. Sunday, July 19 and continue through Monday morning, July 20 at approximately 5 a.m., weather permitting.

SHA will temporarily close I-695 ramps at Security Boulevard for four consecutive nights next week, weather permitting.  The following ramp work schedule is subject to change:
• Sunday night:  I-695 Outer Loop (southbound) ramp to eastbound and westbound Security Boulevard.  Traffic will be detoured to I-70 East toward the park and ride to the Security Boulevard exit.
• Monday night: I-695 Inner Loop (northbound) ramp to eastbound and westbound Security Boulevard.   Traffic will be detoured to Liberty Road (exit 18) and back to the ramp to Security Boulevard.
• Tuesday: Security Boulevard ramps to Inner Loop or Outer Loop (one at a time).
• Wednesday: Security Boulevard ramps to Inner or Outer Loop (one at a time).

Additionally, SHA and the contractor plan to institute 30-hour weekend ramp closures at the Security Boulevard interchange; one between 11 p.m. on Saturday July 25 and 5 a.m. Monday, July 27, and another between 11 p.m. Saturday, August 1 and 5 a.m. Monday, August 3.
No ramp closures or detours are expected at the I-695 / Edmondson Avenue interchange; however, motorists should plan ahead for ramp traffic shifts and construction crews on the ramps.

Resurfacing along the mainline of I-695 will begin late July, weather permitting.  Temporary single lane closures along the Inner Loop and Outer Loop of I-695 may occur nightly between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, with double lane closures along I-695 between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

SHA’s contractor is American Infrastructure, Inc. of Fallston.  The entire roadway resurfacing project is slated for completion late fall 2009, weather permitting.  For more information about the I-695 project, citizens may contact the I-695 project field office at (410) 945-1050 or contact SHA’s District Four Office – Construction Division at 410-229-2420, toll free at 1-866-998-0367, or email at shadistrict4@sha.state.md.us.
