​UPDATED Work Includes Applying a Protective Seal to the Bridge Deck

(July 14, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will make steel repairs and apply a protective seal to the deck of the MD 28 (Dickerson Road) bridge over the Monocacy River in Frederick County The sealant is a chemical treatment that protects against deterioration and extends the service life of the bridge.

The work requires a total closure of the bridge over three weekends. The bridge will close beginning Fridays at 10 p.m. and reopen the following Monday at 5 a.m. on these dates:

• July 30 through August 2.
• August 6 through August 9.
• August 20 through August 23.

The original starting date of July 23 was postponed. Work for the weekend of August 13 was postponed to August 20.

During the weekend closures, MDOT SHA will detour vehicles using MD 109 (Old Hundred Road), MD 355 (Urbana Pike), MD 80 (Fingerboard Road) and MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike). Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time if traveling these areas during the closure. 

There will also be single lane closures with a flagging operation from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday so that crews can safely work on the bridge. This work will start Monday, July 19, and is expected to be complete next month. 

This work is the first major structural project on the MD 28 bridge since it was built in 1931. The work is needed to enhance safety, extend the life of the bridge and reduce future maintenance. Learn more about the bridge rehabilitation project by clicking HERE.
