Closure and Detour Part of $22 million Project to Widen I-83, Replace Bridge

(September 7, 2018) –The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will close the eastbound Padonia Road ramp to northbound I-83 (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway) in Timonium on September 12 for a $22 million project that will ease congestion on the ramp during peak travel hours. MDOT SHA will widen Padonia Road under the dual bridges that carry I-83 over the roadway to provide new shoulders and a new dedicated left-turn lane from eastbound Padonia Road to the entrance ramp to northbound I-83, which will improve safety and reduce congestion. This work is the first step of the project that also will replace the dual I-83 bridges over Padonia Road.

MDOT SHA will provide the following detour for drivers: Take Deerco Road to the I-83/Timonium Road interchange, where drivers can access northbound I-83. Motorists should plan on single-lane closures and traffic splits on Padonia Road to provide a safe work zone and allow for removal of the old bridge and construction of the new bridge. One lane of traffic in each direction will be open during peak morning and evening travel hours. MDOT SHA’s contractor will guide motorists through the work zone using dynamic message signs and concrete barrier.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
