(May 30, 2018) - Beginning Friday, June 8 at 9 p.m., the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will resurface the outer loop of I-495 (Capital Beltway) Bridge over Kensington Parkway. The bridge deck resurfacing will significantly improve ride quality and will be complete and open to traffic no later than 5 p.m. Saturday, June 9, weather permitting.

Motorists will encounter triple lane closures between MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) and MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue) beginning at 9 p.m. Friday. MDOT SHA will maintain one travel lane at all times until crews complete resurfacing the bridge deck.

Although traffic volumes decrease at night and on weekends, nearly 233,000 vehicles per day on average travel on this section of the Capital Beltway so motorists should expect major delays during paving. MDOT SHA suggests using MD 193 (University Boulevard), MD 586 (Veirs Mill Road) and MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) as alternate routes.

The bridge deck resurfacing is part of MDOT SHA’s $8 million safety and resurfacing project, which should be complete mid-summer. Click here for more project information.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
