(May 30, 2018) – This summer, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will replace the MD 381 (Brandywine Road) Bridge over Timothy Branch in Prince George’s County. The existing structure was installed as an interim measure in 2011 when the old bridge was damaged during Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.

MDOT SHA crews close and detour Brandywine Road for 10 weeks beginning mid-June when schools dismiss for the summer. MDOT SHA anticipates the bridge to re-open in late-August before the new school year.
Drivers will be detoured using Missouri Avenue and US 301 (Crain Highway). Travelers should add extra time to their commute for the work zone detour.

The new bridge will carry two travel lanes and bicycle compatible shoulders. Work on the project consists of:
• Removing the four temporary 60-inch corrugated pipes and replace with a 24-foot concrete bridge;
• Constructing, paving and striping bridge approaches;
• Installing guardrail and traffic barrier; and
• Adding roadway signs and new pavement markings.
“The closure and detour will enable crews to complete the work in the safest environment and reduced time,” stated SHA District Engineer Andre Futrell. “MDOT SHA has many projects under construction in this area; as work crews continue enhancing the transportation network in the county, remain alert for utility and work crews and equipment.”
MDOT SHA’s contractor, Concrete General Inc. of Gaithersburg, will use barrier, barrels and detour signs to guide the 10,000 vehicles who use this section of MD 381 through the work zone. Local traffic will have access up to the point of the closure on either side of the bridge.
While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely.
