Right-Turn Only Restriction to be in Place during Peak Traffic Hours

(July 24, 2008) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning a project to enhance safety by restricting left turns and through movements along MD 214 (Central Avenue) at Riva Road during peak travel times. On or about July 25, SHA will install signs at the intersection prohibiting motorists on Riva Road from turning left onto MD 214 or proceeding through the intersection during peak traffic volume hours, which are 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., and 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. During these times, motorists will only be allowed to make right turns from Riva Road onto MD 214.

The restrictions will improve safety and reduce congestion by eliminating turning conflicts at the intersection during peak commute times. Average daily traffic on this section of MD 214 is approximately 19, 000 vehicles, with the heaviest volumes during peak drive times.

Citizens who have questions about traffic operations along MD 214 or other State-numbered highways in Anne Arundel County may call SHA’s District 5 Office at 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603.

With safety its number one priority, the Maryland State Highway Administration is a proud partner of Choose Safety for Life, a campaign that provides one voice for drivers, motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists and truckers. With 93 percent of traffic crashes occurring because someone made a wrong choice on Maryland roadways, virtually all traffic crash fatalities could be prevented if everyone practices these five key steps: B-SAFE – Buckle up, Slow down – speeding kills, Always drive sober, Focus, Everyone share the road.
