(April 15, 2016) – Beginning Monday evening, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will resurface more than one-mile of US 1 (Washington Boulevard) between Assateague Drive (just south of MD 175) and Gatewood Drive in Jessup.  The $1.2 million project will be complete mid-summer, weather permitting.

SHA will grind (remove the top layer of asphalt,) pave and restripe US 1, which was last resurfaced in 1988.  Additionally, crews will upgrade guard rail along the corridor.

Nearly 29,000 vehicles use this section of US 1 each day, including more than 2,000 trucks on average. To minimize traffic delays, most of the work will take place at night between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.  SHA’s contractor, CJ Miller of Hampstead, can also close a single lane between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.  Motorists are encouraged to build in extra commuting time and possibly use I-95 as an alternate route to avoid delays.

SHA will use flaggers, cones and barrels to safely guide drivers through the work zone.  April is work zone safety awareness month.  Motorists are urged to “Think Orange” and slowdown and pay close attention in work zones.

Construction season is underway.  A complete listing of current roadway projects is included in E-Road Ready, the online brochure.  For more information on Work Zone Safety Awareness, visit www.roads.maryland.gov and click on the work zone safety banner.  Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
