Traffic to be Detoured 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Weekdays Beginning Monday, September 8th

(September 5, 2008) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close MD 657 (Douglas Hill Avenue) during the day, Monday through Friday, to resurface approximately two miles from MD 36 (Georges Creek Road) to the Allegany County Line near Lonaconing. SHA will complete the project by the end of the week, weather permitting.

The roadway will temporarily close to traffic between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. weekdays beginning Monday, September 8. Motorists should expect road closures this section of MD 657 between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Temporary traffic signs are in place in both directions to alert motorists of the closure and detour route. Motorists should expect delays during construction. SHA is closing the roadway for resurfacing as the narrow lanes along MD 657 will not allow crews to alternate traffic in one lane.

Motorists wishing to access westbound MD 657 will continue south along MD 36 to MD 935 (Lower Georges Creek Road) to Bartlett Run Road to Michael Road to Russell Road to Westernport Road to Swamp Road to MD 657. Eastbound motorists will be detoured from MD 657 to Swamp Road to Westernport Road to Russell Road to Michael Road to Bartlett Run Road to MD 935 to MD 36 back to MD 657.

SHA awarded the contract to I. A. Construction, of Cumberland. Citizens who have questions about traffic operations along MD 657, or other State numbered routes in Allegany County, may call SHA’s District 6 Office at 301-729-8400 or toll free at 1-800-760-7138.
