Motorists Advised to Plan Ahead for Extra Travel Time Along I-83 between Exits 27 and 36 This Fall and Winter

(September 8, 2008) -- The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) today announced that it will this week begin a new $4 million project to resurface I-83 (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway) between Exit 27 (the Mt. Carmel Road Interchange) and Downes Road (south of Exit 36, Old York Road Interchange).

This project, which is part of SHA’s ongoing interstate highway maintenance and safety improvement program, includes pavement milling, repair and resurfacing of approximately nine miles along I-83. The construction work will be done along the northbound lanes of I-83 first, then the southbound lanes.

Single-lane closures may occur along a section of northbound I-83 at any time except 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. weekdays Monday - Thursday and on weekends between 3 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Sunday. Single-lane closures may occur along a section of southbound I-83 at any time except 5 a.m. - 9 a.m. weekdays Monday - Friday and on weekends between 3 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Sunday. SHA advises motorists to plan for extra travel time along I-83 between south of Exit 27 and Exit 36; motorists may also consider using alternative routes such as MD 45 (York Road).

The resurfacing project also includes safety features such as: installation of reflective pavement markings; installation of new raised reflective pavement markings, installation of in-ground roadway weather sensors, and installation of “rumble strips” along the shoulders of I-83.

SHA and its contractor, Gray and Sons, Inc. of Timonium, appreciate motorists’ patience and understanding while travel through the I-83 work zone. Weather permitting, the project will be complete by early-spring 2009, weather permitting.

Citizens with questions about the I-83 project may call the SHA’s District 4 Office - Construction Section at 410-321-2820, toll-free at 1-800-962-3077, or by e-mail at SHADistrict4@sha.state.md.us.
