Project Will Improve Safety and Ride Quality in Rockville

(September 10, 2008) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a one and a half mile safety and resurfacing project along MD 586 between MD 28 (Norbeck Road) and the Rock Creek Bridge in Rockville, Montgomery County. Weather permitting, the project will be complete spring 2009.

The $2.9 million project also includes culvert pipe cleaning, repair and replacement of the existing guardrail, inlets, and median, as well as curb and gutters. Safety improvements include upgrading sidewalks to meet ADA standards, and adding new pavement markings.

During construction, motorists can expect single lane closures and possible lane shifts along MD 586 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., and double lane closures between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Monday through Friday. SHA will provide signs, variable message signs, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone. SHA awarded the contract to Ardent Company, LLC of McLean, VA.

Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups. When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices. Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.
