(May 26, 2015) – The Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration (SHA) crews are working on two major construction projects on MD 410 (East West Highway) in Montgomery County. The pair of safety and resurfacing projects will improve MD 410 between MD 355 (Wisconsin Avenue) and MD 185 (Connecticut Avenue) in Bethesda and between Carey Lane and Fenton Street in Silver Spring. Weather permitting, this nearly $5 million investment for MD 410 will be complete by the end of the year.

The $2.8 million improvements between MD 355 and MD 185 include:

•        Replacing and upgrading guardrail;

•        Updating traffic signals at the intersections of MD 410 at Montgomery Avenue, Chelton Road, Waverly and Pearl streets;

•        Constructing concrete bus pads (the road surface located directly in front of a bus stop to be strong enough to support heavier vehicles); and

•        Cleaning pipes to improve roadway drainage.

The $2 million improvements between Fenton Street and Carey Lane include:

•       Constructing mid-block pedestrian crossing west of Blair Mill Road and at Blair Mill Way;

•       Improving traffic signals at the intersections of MD 410 at Fenton Street and MD 390 (16th Street); and

•       Replacing the concrete median on MD 410 just east of US 29 (Colesville Road).

“Motorists and pedestrians should remain aware of changing traffic patterns inside the work zones on East West Highway,” said SHA District Engineer Brian Young. “Some phases of work will create noise, especially overnight. We appreciate the patience of area residents as we work to complete these two key safety improvement projects.”

Crews may temporarily close one lane on MD 410 from MD 355 to MD 185, weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight, Sunday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

To perform all phases of work on MD 410 from Fenton Street to Carey Lane, crews may temporarily close one lane, weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight, Sunday through Thursday, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Nighttime work is scheduled during the week of June 1, and will then resume after July 5.

Both projects include upgrading curb ramps and driveways for Americans with Disabilities Act compliance and replacing existing damaged sidewalk and curb and gutter. SHA will also patch, grind and resurface traffic lanes and add new pavement markings.

Those who would like more information on the MD 410 projects may contact the SHA District 3 Office at 301-513-7300 or shadistrict3@sha.state.md.us.  In addition to this project, drivers may also encounter mobile or short-term work zones.  Click here for a listing of major SHA projects in Maryland.  Always expect the unexpected, pay extra close attention and drive slowly through any work zone. Whether it’s a tree trimming operation or a bridge project, be aware when orange is there: Think Orange (the color of construction equipment and signs), stay alert and slow down. Everyone is at risk.

In four out of five work zone-related crashes, it is the driver or passenger who is injured or killed. In 2014, nine people lost their lives in Maryland work zone crashes, including four highway workers. While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to keep traffic safely moving in work zones, please partner with us because work zone safety is everyone’s business – slow down and stay alert. Safer driving. Safer work zones. For everyone.
