(May 26, 2015) – Beginning Saturday, June 20, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will close the Falls Road (MD 25) Bridge over Georges Run in northern Baltimore County to begin a project to replace the bridge. The bridge will remain closed to all traffic until late August, weather permitting.

The Falls Road Bridge was built in 1932 and is located south of Gunpowder Road. Although structurally safe, the bridge is nearing the end of its useful life. SHA will replace it with a new concrete slab bridge measuring 55 feet long, with 12-foot lanes and 5-foot shoulders on both sides of the bridge.

Pre-construction activities will begin on Falls Road in June and temporary daytime, single lane closures and flagging operations are permitted between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays. Prior to June 20, crews will place portable digital message boards along Falls Road to alert travelers to the upcoming road closure and detour. Construction detour traffic signs will direct all through travelers on Falls Road between Gunpowder Road and Mt. Carmel Road to a detour route using Gunpowder Road and Mt. Carmel Road.

“The Georges Run bridge closure and detour are necessary for the safety of travelers and construction crews,” said SHA District Engineer David Peake. “SHA encourages all motorists and bicyclists to plan ahead for extra travel time on Falls Road and travel with caution on the detour route this summer.”

A-Del Construction of Newark, DE is SHA’s contractor for the $3 million project.
