(March 25, 2015) –The Maryland State Highway (SHA) is cleaning and painting nine bridges in Allegany and Garrett counties, a project that will continue through the end of 2015. SHA awarded a $1.4 million areawide bridge cleaning and painting contract to Titan Industrial Service of Baltimore. This work is part of SHA’s bridge system preservation program and will help extend the service life of the bridges.
Bridges included in the project are:
Allegany County:
• MD 935 (Lower Georges Creek Road) over Georges Creek near Barton
• Orleans Rd over I-68 in eastern Allegany County
• I-68 over MD 658 (Vocke Road) in LaVale
Garrett County:
• MD 546 (Beall School Road) over US 40 Alternate (National Pike)
• Eastbound I-68 over Lower New Germany Road
• Westbound I-68 over Lower New Germany Rd
• Green Lantern Road over I-68
• Old Morgantown Road over I-68 near Friendsville
• MD 42 (Friendsville Road) over the Youghiogheny River in Friendsville
Motorists traveling in these areas may encounter temporary lane closures during off-peak hours while crews install work platforms, but the majority of the work will not impact traffic. The project includes blasting old paint and repainting the bridge beams. SHA expects the work to be completed by late fall.
While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
