SHA to Improve Safety and Traffic Flow with the Addition of a Bypass Lane on MD 108 at Fieldcrest Road in Montgomery County

(October 6, 2008) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a $490,000 safety improvement project along MD 108 (Olney Laytonsville Road) at Fieldcrest Road in Laytonsville, Montgomery County. Weather permitting the project will be complete late-November 2008.

SHA will widen westbound MD 108 to create a bypass lane. The bypass lane will improve safety and reduce congestion by allowing traffic to safely bypass turning traffic.

SHA will also restripe westbound MD 108 at Stanbrook Lane to create a new left turn lane; grind, resurface, and patch the roadway; and construct new inlets and install pipe. During construction, motorists can expect single lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. SHA will use variable message signs, barrels and cones to guide motorists through the work zone. SHA awarded the contract to F.O. Day Co., Inc. of Rockville.

Citizens who have questions about MD 108 or any other State numbered roadway in Montgomery County should call SHA’s District 3 Office at 1-800-749-0737. Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups. When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices. Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.
