“From Rocky Roads to Roads That Rock” Makes Key Highway Entrance Come Alive With Timeline Models, Interactive Displays

(October 8, 2008) – The Maryland Science Center is featuring an educational exhibit that traces the history of Maryland’s road system over the course of the last century, from the founding of the State Roads Commission (SRC) in 1908 to the present day.
The exhibit, From Rocky Roads to Roads That Rock, features scale models, vintage signage, and a virtual re-creation of the State Operations Center that includes a functioning joystick-operated camera.
From Rocky Roads to Roads That Rock is the latest in a series of exhibits celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Modern Road Building in Maryland. It was produced under the guidance of the Maryland Highway Centennial Committee (see attachment) and founding partners that include the Maryland State Highway Administration, Maryland Transportation Authority, Maryland Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Maryland Quality Initiative, Maryland Public Television, and many private industry partners. (See attachment for a complete list.)
The multi-faceted centennial celebration is sponsored by a partnership of Maryland’s public and private transportation industry organizations. More than 70 companies in the private sector have joined together to sponsor the celebration.
The purpose of the Centennial Celebration is two-fold: to raise traffic safety awareness among drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians, and to remind Maryland’s citizens how highways contribute to our mobility, prosperity and quality of life.
Governor Harry R. Hughes is the Honorary Chairman of the Maryland Highway Centennial Committee – Maryland Transportation Secretary John D. Porcari is the Chairman.
The exhibit will be on display at the Science Center until April 30, 2009, the 101st anniversary of the founding of the SRC.
