Realignment of Calvert County Intersection Expected to Take Approximately One Week

(October 10, 2008) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close Duke Street at MD 2/4 in Prince Frederick on or about Sunday, October 12, 2008. The closure will last for approximately one week and is necessary for SHA to re-grade the intersection to align the pavement on Duke Street with the new northbound lane along MD 2/4. This is part of a $16 million widening project along Solomons Island Road in Calvert County.

Work will be limited to this intersection only and will have limited impact to traffic. Motorists can still access Duke Street during construction by taking MD 2/4 to Old Field, Lane then left on Merrimac Court to Duke Street.

The MD 2/4 widening project extends from Old Field Lane/Sherry Lane to Commerce Lane and includes the MD 2/4 intersection with MD 231 (Church Street/Hallowing Point Road). Work includes widening from four to six lanes, as well as improvements to intersections and turn lanes. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2010, weather permitting.

Citizens who have questions about this project or other projects or traffic operations along State-numbered highways in Calvert, Charles, St. Mary’s or Anne Arundel Counties may call SHA’s District 5 Office at 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603.

SHA thanks motorists for their patience and cooperation and encourages drivers to “think orange” when in a construction zone. On any day, there could be more than 350 work zones in Maryland. Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups. When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE: slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected. Choose to make work zone safety your business at www.choosesafetyforlife.com.
