Through Truck Traffic Will Be Restricted During Taneytown Streetscape Construction; Local Deliveries and School Buses Along MD 140 Will be Permitted
(October 21, 2008) – Beginning Wednesday, October 29, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will detour truck traffic (five tons gross vehicle weight and over) along eastbound and westbound MD 140 in Taneytown. Local deliveries and school buses will continue to have access along MD 140 during construction.
As part of ‘streetscape’ construction, SHA reduced the lane width along MD 140 through Taneytown, creating challenges for trucks to safely navigate the work zone. Detouring truck traffic is necessary to create a safer environment for crews and pedestrians during this project. Truck traffic along MD 140 will be detoured using the routes outlined below:
Trucks traveling west along MD 140 will be detoured north along MD 97 (Littlestown Pike) through Pennsylvania then south along US 15 (Emmitsburg Road) back to MD 140. Temporary traffic signs will divert trucks along the detour route.
Trucks traveling east along MD 140 will be detoured north along US 15 through Pennsylvania then south along MD 97 back to MD 140.
SHA will continue to detour truck traffic during the length of the construction project. The overall streetscape project will improve nearly two miles along MD 140 through Taneytown. The $18 million project should be complete by spring 2011, weather permitting. SHA encourages motorists to stay alert for the detour. Those who have questions about MD 140 traffic operations or other State numbered routes in Carroll County, may call SHA’s District 7 Office toll free at 1-800-635-5119.
