Complete Closure of MD 464 Quickest and Safest Way to Make Repairs

(October 20, 2008) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration’s (SHA) today closed the MD 464 (Point of Rocks Road) Bridge over the Catoctin Creek in southwestern Frederick County. The bridge will be closed for up to four weeks for repairs.

A recent assessment showed the bridge needed repairs prior to its scheduled replacement in spring 2010. The MD 464 Bridge has been on a more aggressive yearly inspection schedule along with bridges scheduled for replacement. The normal inspection schedule for State Highway bridges is every two years.

As a proactive measure, SHA today closed the bridge to make immediate repairs. The closure of MD 464 is the safest and quickest way to make the repairs in the shortest amount of time.

All traffic along MD 464 heading east from Brunswick or west from Point of Rocks will be detoured.
• Westbound MD 464 will be detoured to a right onto Horine Road, a left onto westbound MD 180, to a left onto Olive School Road and back to westbound MD 464.
• Eastbound MD 464 will be directed to a left onto Olive School Road, to right onto MD 180 to a right onto Horine Road, back to eastbound MD 464.

All detours have been coordinated with the Frederick County Department of Transportation. Local schools and emergency responders have been made aware of the closure and detour. Approximately 4,000 vehicles use this section of MD 464 each day.

Portable variable message signs alerting motorists of the closure will be placed along east and westbound MD 464 as well as along the detour route. SHA thanks motorists for their patience.

SHA encourages all motorists to drive responsibly and “Think Orange” while driving through work zones by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times.
