Motorists Should Expect Delays and Plan on Alternate Routes This Saturday

(October 28, 2008) – Beginning this Friday night at 9 p.m., the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will close the two right lanes along westbound US 50 (John Hanson Highway) between US 301 and Lottsford Vista Road (east of I-495) in Prince George’s County. The lane closures are necessary to patch and replace sections of concrete along westbound US 50.

Weather permitting, SHA will begin work on Friday, October 31 at 9 p.m. and continue through Sunday morning, November 2 at approximately 2 a.m.

The two left lanes (one through lane and the HOV lane) will remain open to traffic during construction activity; the HOV lane restrictions will be lifted. SHA will use arrow boards, advance warning signs and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone.

SHA reminds motorists to reduce speeds, stay alert and use caution while driving through the work zone. Remember work zones comprise not only large construction projects, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups. When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices. Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected. Citizens who have questions about US 50 or any other State numbered roadway in Prince George’s County should call SHA’s District 3 office at 1-800-749-0737.
