Two Traffic Signals To Be Removed And Three New Roundabouts to Open along MD 32 As Part of Safety Improvements

(October 30, 2008) – Today, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will open two new ramps and remove two existing traffic signals along MD 32 (Sykesville Road) at Burntwoods Road in Howard County. The $27 million project will be complete spring 2009.

As part of this significant milestone, SHA consolidated access points along MD 32 to improve safety and reduce congestion. Today, SHA is removing the existing traffic signals along MD 32 at Pfefferkorn Road and Ten Oaks Road. Motorists wishing to access Burntwoods Road, Pfefferkorn Road and Ten Oaks Road from MD 32 will now use the new ramps along eastbound and westbound MD 32 and three roundabouts along the secondary roads. Additionally, the new Burntwoods Road Bridge over MD 32 will be open to traffic, eliminating a major traffic chokepoint.

Motorists are advised to reduce speed and stay alert for the new traffic pattern. Variable message signs, barrels, and arrow boards will guide motorists through the new traffic pattern. More than 50,000 vehicles travel along MD 32 each day. The MD 32/Burntwoods Road interchange project began in summer 2007. Resurfacing along MD 32 will complete the project next spring.

SHA awarded the construction contract to Kibler Construction of Finksburg. Citizens who have questions about traffic operations on MD 32, or other State numbered routes in Howard County, may call SHA’s District 7 Office toll free at 1-800-635-5119.

SHA reminds motorists to reduce speeds, stay alert and use caution while driving through work zones. Remember work zones include not only large construction projects, but smaller, mobile operations such as pothole repair and litter pick up. When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices.
