(May 17, 2013) – The State Highway Administration (SHA) will close two additional sections under the I-68 “Crosstown Bridge” to parking as work continues on a project to repair, clean and paint the more than half-mile-long bridge over Cumberland.
Both sections will be closed to parking for several months.
The parking area under the bridge between South Centre Street and South Mechanic Street will remain open. Alternative parking is also available for a monthly fee from Merling Wholesale at the former Moose Lodge building on Beall Street. Those interested in parking in that lot should call Merling at 301-729-2571. More information about city parking lots and permits is available from the Cumberland Parking Enforcement Office at 301-759-6473.
Crews are currently blast-cleaning and painting the steel on the section of the bridge over Canal Place and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Completion of that section is expected by mid-July. Meanwhile, crews will be repairing the concrete bridge supports in the newly closed sections.
