Resurfacing Expected to Begin June 22; Motorists Should Expect Daytime Delays during Construction

(June 17, 2009) – Beginning next Monday, June 22, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin resurfacing approximately three miles of MD 274 (Joseph Biggs Highway) between Cherry Street (in the town of Rising Sun) and Post Road in Cecil County. Weather permitting, construction will be complete by mid-July.

SHA will patch and resurface approximately three miles along MD 274. Single-lane closures may occur Monday through Friday between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.; traffic flaggers will alternate traffic on the two-lane road. SHA will also use electronic variable message signs, cones and drums to guide motorists through the work zone.

Although the road will remain open to the public, motorists traveling to local schools, businesses, shopping centers, churches and parks should expect delays during their morning and evening commutes. Citizens planning to use MD 274 to reach the town of Rising Sun may want to consider Hopewell Road to MD 273 as an alternate route.

The $426,000 project will be done by Kinsley Construction, Inc. Citizens who have questions about MD 274 or any other State numbered roadway in Cecil County can call SHA’s District 2 office at 410-778-3061 or toll-free at 1-800-637-9740.
