(December 21, 2012) – Beginning tonight at 10 p.m. the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will remove a sign structure that spans I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between the US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) and the Edmondson Avenue exits.  The sign should be removed and lanes open by 5 a.m. Saturday, December 22.

Crews will begin closing lanes to remove the sign at 10 p.m. tonight, December 21 starting with the inner loop lanes.  Lane closures will then shift to the outer loop of I-695 with a total closure at 12 midnight to remove the entire sign structure.  The following Beltway detours will be in effect:

• Outer loop I-695 to westbound US 40 to a left turn on to North Rolling Road to a left onto MD 144 (Frederick Road) and back to I-695.
• Inner loop I-695 to westbound MD 144 and a right turn onto North Rolling Road to a right turn on eastbound US 40 and back to I-695.

SHA recommends that motorists from the northeast seeking to access I-95 in Arbutus exit at I-70 and use US 29 to MD 100 or use I-695 east to southbound I-95 in Rosedale.  Crews will use signs and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone.

While conducting a routine inspection of the sign SHA crews found damage to the sign structure that required repair. Since the structure spans the width of both loops of the beltway, the entire structure must be removed without traffic traveling beneath the work area. Once the structure is repaired or replaced, crews will install and replace the signs.  In the meantime, SHA will place temporary directional signs to guide traffic.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
