Merchants, patrons to benefit from smoother ride on busy service road; Overnight Work Scheduled for Tonight and Tuesday Night

(November 19, 2012) – Merchants, commuters, local residents and beach-bound tourists can all rejoice!  A section of Buschs Frontage Road (MD 908A), a busy service road along US 50 eastbound in Anne Arundel County, is getting a new surface.

Beginning tonight, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will patch and resurface the half-mile stretch of road that serves dozens of popular businesses on eastbound US 50, about three miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.  Work includes patching, milling, resurfacing and restriping.

To ensure the safety of workers and motorists, SHA will close the Buschs Frontage Road exit from US 50 eastbound (exit 29A).  Work is taking place overnight between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.  Motorists will be directed to continue past the exit to Whitehall Road (exit 30), where they can easily access the Buschs Frontage Road businesses.

“A lot of people have been looking forward to this project,” said SHA District Engineer Lee Starkloff.  “Although this is a small stretch of road, it’s an important business corridor that serves thousands of patrons each day and sees substantial traffic volumes during the peak summer travel season.  By improving the roadway surface, we’re helping a lot of motorists make a smoother and safer exit from busy US 50.”

The $200,000 asphalt resurfacing project will enhance safety by providing improved traction, better drainage and highly visible retro-reflective pavement markings.

Nearly 8,000 vehicles use Buschs Frontage Road each day, with significantly higher weekend volumes during peak summer travel months. M. Luis Construction of Baltimore is the contractor for this project. SHA expects to complete this work by mid-December, weather permitting.  Follow SHA on Twitter @MDSHA, view our Facebook page and use 511 or MD511.org.
