(November 9, 2012) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is scheduled to reopen the ramps to and from eastbound I-70 at South Street in Frederick the morning of Monday, November 12, weather permitting.

The ramps have been closed since the end of August as part of SHA’s $40 million widening and bridge replacement project. They were initially scheduled to reopen October 28, the day after SHA shifted traffic eastbound traffic onto the new bridge, but the ramp reopening was postponed due to Hurricaine Sandy.

In order to revise overhead highway signs and complete other work before opening the ramps, crews will need to close a single right lane in both eastbound and westbound directions between 9 p.m. on Sunday, November 11, and 5 a.m. Monday, November 12.  The ramps will open by 5 a.m. Monday.

The remainder of the project will include demolition of the old South Street bridges and construction of the second phase (inner portion) of the new bridge and roadway. Weather permitting, the project will be complete in summer 2013. SHA’s contractor for the project is Corman Construction of Annapolis Junction. Anyone with questions about the I-70 project may call the project’s 24-hour hotline at 855-213-0070.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
