(October 26, 2012) –The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close lanes this weekend along eastbound and westbound MD 410 (East West Highway) between MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue) and MD 212 (Riggs Road) in Hyattsville for concrete bus pad construction.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, October 26 (weather permitting), crews will close the far two right lanes on eastbound and westbound MD 410. All lanes will be open to traffic no later than 10 a.m. on Sunday, October 28.

SHA will cut, excavate and pour a new bus pad (road surface located directly in front of a bus stop that is strong enough to carry heavier vehicles without damaging the roadway). The bus pad reconstruction is part of a $1.1 million safety and resurfacing project on MD 410 in Takoma Park in Montgomery County and Hyattsville in Prince George’s County.

Crews will perform different phases of the construction. Although crews may not always be present, lanes must remain closed until the bus pad concrete is fully cured and all impacted lanes are declared safe for travel. SHA will use construction barrels, construction cones arrow boards and flaggers to guide motorists through the work zone. Approximately 21,000 vehicles use East West Highway between MD 650 and MD 212 daily, so motorists should plan for extra commute time and use alternate routes to avoid construction delays.

As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
