(October 21, 2012) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is advising motorists that all lanes of MD 295 (Baltimore Washington Parkway) and West Nursery Road over MD 295 are open to traffic following this weekend’s bridge work, including re-attaching the existing bridge deck of West Nursery Road.  Northbound MD 295 opened shortly after midnight Sunday, October 21 and West Nursery Road over MD 295 opened at 4:30 a.m.

The road openings came after closures of northbound MD 295 and West Nursery Road during a project to replace the bridge deck and steel beams, which were pre-assembled.  At 12:45 a.m. Saturday, October 20, crews encountered a problem with a weight shift of the bridge, which was situated on a specially designed SPMT (Self Propelled Modular Transport).  SPMT’s are designed for moving especially heavy loads.

Four heavy-duty construction cranes were brought in later Saturday to stabilize and re-attach the West Nursery Road Bridge deck over northbound MD 295.  SHA bridge inspectors thoroughly examined the bridge to ensure safety and subsequently permitted the opening of the roads.

SHA’s project team is meeting with contractors on Monday to evaluate the removal of the West Nursery Road Bridge and develop a process and schedule of when and how to move forward in the coming weeks.
