Work Will Take Place over Next Two Weeks at the Arena Drive Interchange in Landover

(March 3, 2009) – This Thursday night, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will open a newly reconfigured ramp along northbound I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) at MD 202 (Landover Road). The new configuration will replace the existing ramp at the interchange and is part of the $26.5 million I-95/Arena Drive project in Landover.

SHA will remove the existing “cloverleaf-style” design of the interchange to provide enhanced access and reduce traffic conflicts entering and exiting the Capital Beltway. SHA will convert the existing northbound I-495 ramp to eastbound MD 202 (exit 17A) with a signalized “T” intersection at the top of the ramp, which will be controlled by a new traffic signal. The new traffic pattern will enable northbound I-95 traffic to access either direction along MD 202 with one ramp. Crews are scheduled to work between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Motorists wishing to travel along northbound I-95 will now use a continuous right through lane to exit to eastbound MD 202 toward Largo. Drivers traveling along westbound MD 202 toward Landover will now use a new double left turn lane at the signalized intersection. In case of inclement weather, the ramp closure will be rescheduled for a later date.

Additionally, on Saturday night, March 14, SHA will temporarily close up to three left lanes along southbound I-95 between exit 19, US 50 and exit 15, MD 214 (Central Avenue). The closures are necessary to shift traffic to a new configuration and will be in effect beginning at 8 p.m. and continuing through Monday morning, March 23 at 5 a.m.

Motorists should be prepared for new traffic patterns and drive carefully in the work zone. Electronic message signs, drums, and arrow boards will guide motorists through the work zone. To avoid any delays, motorists can use MD 193 or US 301 to the east or I-295 to the west to bypass I-95. The $26.5 million I-95/Arena Drive project began summer 2007 and is expected to be complete this fall, weather permitting.

SHA reminds all drivers to Choose Safety for Life and buckle up, obey posted speed limits, think orange, and stay alert. Customers who have questions about traffic operations on I-95/I-495, MD 202 or other State numbered routes in Prince George’s County may call SHA’s District 3 Office at 301-513-7300 or toll free at 1-800-749-0737.
